| Effort Values (EVs)- Hidden stats that determine the stat increases in your Pokemon when they level up.
Effort Values (EVs)
Effort Values (EVs for short) are hidden stats that determine the stat increases in your Pokemon's six stats - HP, Defense, Speed, Special Attack, and Special Defense - when they level up. When you defeat a Pokemon, you'll obtain a certain amount of EVs in one or two stats, ranging between 1-3. Each species of Pokemon will always give the same amount of EVs for that specific stat. For instance, Bidoof will always give you one HP EV.
Gaining four EVs in one particular stat will give you one extra point in that stat. However, please note that this only applies to Pokemon at Level 100 - at any lower Level, you may not notice the stat increase until you acquire more EVs.
You can gain a total of 510 EVs for your Pokemon, with a maximum of 255 EVs (or 252, if you make it divisible by four to not waste EVs) for one single stat. Putting 252 into one stat will give you a total of 63 extra points in that stat, which can make a huge difference to your Pokemon's power. Since you cannot exceed 510 EVs, you'll have to choose which stats you want to max out.
If you plan carefully, you can max out two stats at 252 EVs, 6 EVs for a third stat, and 0 EVs for the last three stats. If you want a well rounded Pokemon with the same number of EVs in each stat you can do that, but it's only worth putting EVs into stats you're going to use. For example, if you have a Special Sweeper, you won't need to max out the Attack EVs since you won't be using the Pokemon's Attack stat.
To gain EVs, you must defeat a Pokemon and earn experience from it, like from a wild or trainer battle. You will not receive EVs from battling other players online, placing a Pokemon in the Breeding Center, using Rare Candies on it, or battling in the Battle Tower.
There's no in-game way to keep track of exactly how many EVs your Pokemon has gained, however, in Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald you can go to talk to a woman in Slateport City who will give you the Effort Ribbon if the EVs of your lead Pokemon have been maxed out. The same holds true in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl where you can acquire the Effort Ribbon for maxing out the EVs in your lead Pokemon by talking to the lady behind the counter at the Sunyshore City Market.
PokeRus
The PokeRus virus serves to benefit those who want to EV train their Pokemon. A Pokemon that has been infected with PokeRus will receive 2x the amount of EVs they normally would've. So, using the Bidoof example again, if a PokeRus infected Pokemon defeated Bidoof, it'd gain two EVs instead of one.
Macho Brace
Equipping a Pokemon with the Macho Brace item works in a similar way to the PokeRus virus in that it'll double the amount of EVs you earn from battles. You can combine the Macho Brace and PokeRus together to get both effects. So a Pokemon with both the Macho Brace and PokeRus defeating a Bidoof would get 1 * 2 * 2 = 4HP EVs. This makes a big difference when battling a Pokemon that gives two or three Evs, which would give you eight or twelve EVs respectively.
Power Items
There are six 'Power' items that you can attach to your Pokemon to raise the amount of EVs you earn. Depending on which item you are holding, you'll get an extra four EVs in that certain stat, as well as the EVs you would've already earned, so battling Bidoof with a Power Weight (which gives you four HP EVs) will give you 1 + 4 = 5HP EVs. Below are the items and the stats they increase:
Bullet Name - Stat Bullet Weight - HP Bullet Bracer - Attack Bullet Belt - Defense Bullet Lens - Sp.Attack Bullet Band - Sp.Defense Bullet Anklet - Speed
Vitamins
You can buy vitamins from the PokeMart in Veilstone City for Money9,800 each. These vitamins will raise your EVs in one stat by 10 points each and you're able to use a maximum of ten of the same vitamin, giving you 100 EVs. The vitamins and the stats they increase are:
Vitamin - Stat HP Up - HP Protein - Attack Iron - Defense Calcium - Sp.Attack Zinc - Sp.Defense Carbos - Speed
Exp. Share
As mentioned in the Faster Training guide, the Effort Values (EVs) gained from the battle aren't split between the Pokemon holding Exp Share and the Pokemon that won the battle. The EVs remain the same for each Pokemon as if they had beaten it themselves. For example, if a Bagon is holding Exp Share and Luxray beats Gyarados, Bagon earns itself 2 Attack EVs, while also Luxray earns 2 Attack EVs.
EV Training
Listed below are the best locations to train your Pokemon for EVs.
I will update for Pokemon B/W soon.
