Serperior

A Wild Pokemon Appeared: Week 8 - Serperior 497

Serperior is a rather interesting Grass starter, being both fairly bulky and speedy at the same time. Though at first glance Serperior may seem like a weakened Sceptile, Serperior has more than enough tricks to differentiate itself from its other speedy Grass counterpart, and being an overall interesting choice for a VGC team.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abilities
Overgrow - When HP is below 1/3rd, Grass’s power increases to 1.5 times.
Perversity - It reverses changes to its stats.

Standard CM Sub

Serperior @ Leftovers

EV's: 200 Sp.Def / 200 Sp.Atk / 110 HP
Ability: Overgrow
Nature: Modest

~Calm Mind
~Substitute
~Leaf Storm/Grass Knot
~Hidden Power (Electric)

Calm mind and substitute are essential on this set, Serperiors 95 base in both defenses means it's a perfect candidate for CM sweeping, Despite having incredibly poor type coverage the combination of Electric + Grass hits everything and with a few CM's behind it the opponent can't afford to switch in on either move. Leaf Storms STAB is paired up with Overgrow on this set, If you have a few CM's under your belt and are at less than 1/3 of it's max HP it's GG, Don't be put off by the fact Leaf Storm has Sp.Attack drops, 2 CM's can get it level again after one use, so my suggestion would be to get 2 CM's under your belt let loose and you'll be back to your starting stats rather than lower, but this isn't always possible. If you're feeling cheeky you could also run Life Orb which is an option but the combination of Sp.attack drops, 25% sub damage and LO damage will kill Serperior off quicker but it's there as an option if you want to give HP-Electric & Leaf Storm a bit more Kick. Grass Knot is an option over leaf storm if you don't want the -2 drop every time it's used which also aids the use of hidden power allowing you to have the best type coverage available.

--------------------------
Standard Sub-Seed

Serperior @ Leftovers

EV's: 252 HP / 100 Speed / 158 Sp.Def
Ability: Overgrow
Nature: Calm

~Leech Seed
~Substitute
~Leaf Storm
~Hidden Power (Electric/Ice)

With leftovers + Leech seed you get the best possible healing combination available to Serperior, The EV spread adds a little bulk to go with the calm nature, leftovers and leech seed as well as it's max HP. don't be fooled by how pretty it looks this thing will become deadly if underestimated and usage of this set should be done with knowledge of how to pull off a sub seed variant, this could go horribly wrong if not used correctly but if it is used correctly you'll have a very stable sub seeder with bulk on your team with the best type coverage available in it's movepool. set will probably be used in UU over OU because of the -2 drop from leaf storm but HP-Electric can hit as many things as that can so don't be afraid to mix it up a little.

--------------------------
Energy Saver

Serperior @ Leftovers/Light Clay

EV's: 200 HP / 100 Def / 100 Sp.Def / 58 Speed / 52 Sp.Atk
Ability: Overgrow
Nature: Jolly

~Light Screen
~Reflect
~Energy Ball
~Hidden Power (Fighting/Water/Fire)

Light Screen & Reflect are going to be essential on teams in this generation due to the the amount of abilities and stat raising moves that have been added, Not only will it stop something killing you off instantly you get 8 turns to set up and sweep with minimal damage being taken, Energy Ball is there for the STAB special attack it will do neutral damage to anything that doesn't resist it, Which is the reason for hidden power, Select Fighting for steel and normal types, Water for fire and ground types, and Fire for Grass, ice or steel types. You could give Hidden Power ice a go also but Energy Ball & HP - Water take care of ground types and you could easily use an ice type to aid against flying types. more coverage is better coverage. Leftovers is also a secondary item choice for survivability and more bulk.

--------------------------
Calm Mind Sub

Serperior @ Life Orb

EV's: 200 Sp.Def / 150 Sp.Atk / 160 HP
Ability: Overgrow
Nature: Timid

~Calm Mind
~Substitute
~Leaf Storm
~Hidden Power (Electric/Ice)

Thanks to Seth Vilo for pointing out Perversity's hidden aspects, If they are correct this set will be the brute force anybody needs on their team, Rather than going with a modest nature like with the standard CM sub set above a timid nature gives it that little bit more speed not that it needs it but maxing out Sp.attack when it receives a +2 boost from leaf storm would be pretty boring and would probably send it to ubers (at smogon) so we move a few Sp.attack EV's into HP for survivability since it's also running a Life Orb on this set, Same rules apply though HP Electric + Leaf Storm is a force to be reckoned with after receiving boosts and hits every type for either neutral or super effective damage. You could still run lefty's if your uneasy with the 10% LO damage but you'd probably have to go with the 200 Sp.Def / 200 Sp.Atk / 110 HP spread to keep it's stability even. I've also provided HP (ice) as an option on this variation just in case you happen to come across some volt absorbers.

---------------------------
Special Sub-Seed (DW) (May not be used as an official set)

Serperior @ Lum Berry

EV's: 200 Sp.Atk / 252 Speed / 56 HP
Ability: Perversity
Nature: Modest

~Leech Seed
~Substitute
~Leaf Storm
~Hidden Power (Fire)

This is probably Serperiors best set, LEaf Storm + perversity just gets more powerful every time it's used and thankfully you can also use Leech Seed before hand to allow Serperior some bulk and health regeneration, Lum berry is for exactly what you think switch in on something lower than base 110 speed that may status induce you and allow yourself to set up sub while they try to re-status you, then hammer away with 3 leaf storms, afterwards you can mix Leaf Storm + HP-fire up to hit everything in the game and kill them.
